Tips: How to Play M4V Videos on Windows Media Player

By Patrick Dyer

June 03, 2017

For Windows users, the most frequently used media player must be the Windows Media Player. With this excellent player, you can not only play various types of video and audio files, but also watch DVDs and listen to CDs on your computer. However, even though Windows Media Player supports many video and audio formats, it still fails to play some frequently used media files such as M4V. In other words, M4V on Windows Media Player is not available.

M4V is a file format developed by Apple Inc. to encode movies, TV episodes and music videos in iTunes Store. At first, we need to divide the M4V videos into two parts: one is DRM-free and the other is DRM-protected. To play common M4V files, a possible way is to change the filename extension from .m4v to .mp4. But the DRM-ed M4V files is another story. This is because the Apple's FairPlay DRM protection prevents the media content from playing on non-apple authorized devices like some of Android phones and most of tablet, Windows Media Player, VLC Media Player, etc.
