Audible's audiobook app for iPhone and iPad makes it very easy for us to download audiobooks and listen to them. But Audible still hasn't released an app for the Apple Watch.
"I just got a series 2 watch. *YAY* Has anyone figured out how to listen to books from audible on this watch? No app from Audible yet." - From Apple Community
After purchasing Apple Watch, many people may want to listen to audiobooks on the watch while running or commuting. Though you can pair your Apple Watch with iPhone (If two devices are in same Wi-Fi network or in the range, you can play. AAX files on the paired iPhone and control them remotely and listen on your Apple Watch.), you may don't want to take your phone on a run.
So is it possible to listen to Audible audiobooks on Apple Watch without an iPhone nearby?
It's great that people have figured out how to use iTunes to play audiobooks on the Apple Watch. However, you cannot apply the way to sync Audible audiobooks to Apple Watch, because the audiobooks have digital rights management (DRM) encryption on the file, which might limit or prevent them from being copied to another device.
Therefore, to play iTunes or Audible audiobooks on Apple Watch, you need to remove the DRM on them first. In this post, we will walk you through how to bypass DRM from Audible audiobook and then play them on Apple Watch without iPhone.
Though it is an inelegant solution compared to a native Audible app for the Apple Watch, it is practical.Just follow the guide below.
Note: If your audiobooks are DRM-free, you can directly skip to Part 2.
We need an audiobook DRM Removal tool to remove the DRM copyright encryption from the iTunes and Audible audiobooks.
I recommend TuneFab Audiobook DRM Removal. This software is initially designed to remove DRM from Apple Music and purchased iTunes songs. Surprisingly, it is also a powerful DRM removal which can strip DRM from iTunes and Audible audiobooks. It is able to convert DRM-ed AA, AAX, M4B audiobook files to DRM-free M4A, MP3, FLAC, etc. After converting them common audio format, you can sync them to Apple Watch successfully.
#1 Remove DRM from audiobooks, Apple Music files and M4P;
#2 Convert DRM-ed M4P, M4B, AA and AAX audio files to MP3, AAC, FLAC;
#3 Easy-to-use and with up to 16x faster conversion speed without quality loss;
#4 Preserve ID tags and chapters information after conversion (MP3/M4A);
Detailing steps to follow:
Step 1. Import Audible Contents to iTunes
If you have set Audible content to automatically import into iTunes (PC), Audible audiobooks will be shown on iTunes directly.
If you haven't, select "Add to library" and choose Audible books. You will need to authorize them with your Audible account signed in.
Once imported, your Audible audiobooks can be found in iTunes by clicking the Book icon, then My audiobooks.
Step 2. Install and Run TuneFab Program
Download, install and run TuneFab audiobooks converter on your computer. iTunes will be opened automatically, don't quit it.
Step 3. Select Audiobooks
Now, you can choose Audiobooks you need by clicking on the option box in front of every Audiobook. This software supports batch conversion, so you can select more than one Audiobook.
Step 4. Choose Output Format
There are nine types of formats for you to choose from: MP3, M4A, AC3, AAC, AIFF, AU, FLAC, M4R, MKA. MP3 and M4A is recommended, because these two formats could preserve the chapter information of the audiobook.
Step 5. Customized the Settings
If you want to modify output settings, just click on "Options" button, you will find all the output parameter here, such as converting speed, output filenames, formats, and so on.
Also you can choose to save ID tags and metadata information to the output MP3 and M4A files or keep Chapter information in the converted M4A files.
Step 6. Remove DRM and Convert
After everything is ready, click on "Convert" and your chosen audiobooks will begin to convert as you can see from the file list. When the conversion finished, you can get the DRM-free Audible audiobooks.
When you get the DRM-free Audible audiobooks, you can follow the steps below to transfer them to Apple Watch.
Step 1. Launch iTunes and click on the "Music" tab.
Step 2. Go to File > New > Playlist to create a new playlist. You can name it "Audible audiobooks" or anything you like.
Step 3. Load the Audible audiobook files you want to listen to on Apple Watch into the newly created playlist.
Step 4. Sync the new "Audiobooks" playlist with your iPhone via iCloud or a cable.
Step 5. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone > Music > Synced Music, and select your "Audiobooks" playlist (it should say "Sync Pending").
Step 6. Attach your Apple Watch to its charger with your iPhone within Bluetooth range. And then wait for it to sync.
Step 7. Once the audiobooks are synced to your Apple Watch, you can play the audiobooks via Apple Watch freely without a nearby iPhone.
Warm Tips: if the song file/audio file is larger than 200 MB, it can't be added to iCloud Music Library and sync to other iOS devices via iTunes.
Though we can finally play Audible audiobooks on Apple Watch, the process is a litter complicated. But TheFab Apple Music Converter has do a great push to help people enjoy audible audiobooks on Apple Watch more freely. Hopefully Audible will surprise us with an app on Apple Watch soon.
