1. What is Audacity
Audacity is started as a recording computer software and free open source digital audio editor since 1999 by Dominic Mazzoni and Roger Dannenberg at Carnegie Mellon University. The software is welcomed and reached 76.5 million downloads by 2011 October. In 2017, it has exceeded 51.8 million downloads. The reason why this program has a good reputation is because of:
1.1. Outstanding Features: Envelope editing, tracks mixing, overdubs recording while playing previously recorded tracks, scrubbing, spectral editing, adding normalization, trimming, fading in and out and more powerful post-processing features.
1.2. Wide Range of Supported Format: WAV, AIFF, OGG and MP3.
1.3. Operating System Compatibility: Windows 7/8/10; Macintosh OS X 10.6 and later; Linux/Unix and other *.nix-based systems
2. How to Record Audio with Audacity
Step 1. Download Audacity on your computer.
Step 2. Turn off "Software Playthrough" by "Edit" > "Preferences..." > "Recording" otherwise the soundcard will try to play the recording and at the meantime, you will re-record it which causes echoes and damages your equipment.
Step 3. Set initial sound levels. Before recording audio, you should monitor and adjust levels of audios to ensure the Meter Toolbar do not reach -9.0 to -6.0 dB.
Step 4. Start recording. Click on the red Record button in the Transport Toolbar and start the recording. Keep an eye on the "disk space remaining" message at the bottom to make sure recordings have adequate space. Hit on the black square icon to stop.
Step 5. Save the capture. After finishing recording, choose "File" > "Export" and in the drop-down list, you will see several audio formats provided. It is highly recommended that you save the computer in WAV or AIFF. You can also save audio to external hard drive or CD as a backup.
Step 6. Edit Audio by Adding Effect. Once you have a raw material backup of your audio, you can add effect and choose those you want by hitting the "Effect" option on the top.
Both TuneFab Screen Recorder and Audacity are the powerful and ideal tool to record computer audios. However, there are obvious differences between them.
The interface of Audacity is not that up-to-date and looks old-fashion. This will to some extent, give its users a misunderstanding that the program is not maintained for years and won't trust this tool at first glance. Moreover, the interface is a little bit stuff up. There are many options at the top of the interface and I feel at sea the first time I saw this function menu.
Instead, TuneFab has a simpler and succinct interface. You can easily know where to click.
Audacity is an excellent audio recording and editing software that enables you to save WAV, AIFF, OGG and MP3 or other formats. WMA, AAC or other formats are not supported. Though Audacity enables you to save MP3, the quality is not that good as you need unless you use variable bitrate (VBR). So I recommend you to export your recording as WAV and create MP3 with iTunes. On the other hand, TuneFab Screen Recorder is merely a video and audio recorder. There are no editing features provided. However, it enables you to export audios into lossless WMA, MP3, M4A and AAC. Moreover, changing the Frame Rate and sound quality is supported.
To draw a conclusion, both TuneFab Screen Recorder and Audacity has their pros and cons. You can choose the one that meets your requirement the most.
