[Ultimate Guide] Troubleshooting for Print Screen Not Working Issue

How do you usually capture screenshot on computer? I guess most of you will use "Print Screen" key as it's the most convenient way to take screenshot.

But recently some users reported that "Print Screen" key didn't work and wondered how to fix Print Screen not working issue. Since this issue can result from many reasons such as incorrect keyboard drivers and interference of some background programs, I hereby list some common fixes for your reference.

Solution 1. End All the Running Programs

As mentioned above, some background programs like OneDrive, Snippet tool or Dropbox might stop you from capturing screenshot on computer, therefore, the first fix you should try is to close these programs one by one and then check whether you can take screenshot via "Print Screen" key successfully. If one of these programs led to Print Screen not working issue, then keep the program closed next time when you try to use the "Print Screen" key.

Solution 2. Restart the Computer

Though restarting the computer is an easy method, it can solve many problems such as Print Screen not working. Therefore, simply restart your computer and check if your issue can be solved now.

Solution 3. Check if Print Screen is used in a correct way

As we all know, keyboards of PC and laptop are different. There is a "F Lock" key or similar key on your laptop keyboard. In some cases, you need to press the "F Lock" key or similar key before using some specific functions. Hence, when you find "Print Screen" button not working on Windows 7, 8 and 10, try to press the "F Lock" key or similar key and then use the "Print Screen" key to capture screenshot.

In addition, also try to press "Alt + PrtScn", "Windows" key + "PrtScn" or "Alt +Fn +PrtScn" keys together to capture screenshot.

Solution 4. Check if Print Screen Key is Damaged

If the PrtSc key is damaged, then it is certain that you can't use the PrtSc key to capture screenshots. In order to check if the issue caused by the damaged PrtSc key, connect another keyboard and try to use the PrtSc key to take screenshot again.

Solution 5. Update your Keyboard Driver

If the above fixes can't help you solve the Print Screen not working issue, then you probably need to update your keyboard driver by following below step-by-step method.

Step 1: Press "Windows" key + "R" on keyboard, then enter "devmgmt.msc" in the run window and click on "OK".

Step 2: Double click on "Keyboards", right click on "Standard PS/2 Keyboard" and select "Update Driver Software...".

Step 3: Select "Search automatically for updated driver software" to let Windows to automatically install the latest driver. After that, reboot Windows and check if the "Print Screen not working issue can be existed. If not, then repeat step 1 and step 2 and go to step 4.

Step 4: Select "Browse my computer for driver software" > "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer" and then choose the latest drivers from the list and click on "Next".

Step 5: After that, reboot your computer and see if you can fix Print Screen not working problem in Windows 7, 8 and 10.

Alternatively, you can use third-party driver update software to update your keyboard driver.

Solution 6. Update Your Operating System

In addition to update your keyboard driver, you are also supposed to update your operating system for fixing Print Screen not working issue.

Simply click on "Start" > "Windows Update (for Windows 7 users) " or "Check for updates (for Windows 10 users)" to launch Windows Update program, then see if there are any available updates for your system. If yes, then install it.
