You may somehow meet with the Black Screen Error when capturing screen on Windows with OBS Studio. Frustrated, isn't it? In order to fix OBS Windows capture black Screen problem, we would like to share you with the 3 methods to effectively fix OBS black screen with the best effective altenative way to fix this annoying problem. Now keep reading and see how to fix it.
There are several reasons why OBS is not working properly to capture what is being displayed on your screen. Each reason has its corresponding solution.
If the program you are recording takes up more GPU than OBS, then it can lead to a black screen in OBS display window. You may need to adjust the OBS's GPU by going through these steps:
Step 1. Close OBS if it is running.
Step 2. Click "NVIDIA Control Panel" in Windows control panel to open it.
Step 3. Select "Manage 3D Settings" > "Program Settings" tab.
Step 4. Under "1. Select a program to customize", click "Add". In the pop-up window, navigate to the .exe path for OBS and add it to the list. Default paths are:
For 32 bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\obs-studio\bin\32bit\obs32.exe
For 64 bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\obs-studio\bin\64bit\obs64.exe
Step 5. Select "High-performance NVIDIA processor" from the drop-down list under "2. Select the preferred graphics processor for this program".
Step 6. Close the panel and restart OBS to see if the issue is fixed.
Black screen may occur due to OBS's compatibility with Windows 10 operating system. You can try to run the software in compatibility mode, to do that:
Step 1. Search "OBS Studio" in Windows search bar.
Step 2. Right-click on the program icon and select "Open file location".
Step 3. In the pop-up window, right-click on the executable and select "Properties" > "Compatibility".
Step 4. Check the box of "Run this Program in compatibility mode for:", and select Windows 7 or 8 in the drop-down list.
Step 5. Save changes and exit Properties. Launch OBS and see if the issue is resolved.
Another reason for causing a black screen could be OBS doesn't have proper administrator privileges to run on your PC. To grant the administrator right is easy:
Step 1. Close OBS if it is running.
Step 2. Go to OBS's executable properties as we did in Method 2 --- clicking on the OBS icon > "Open file location" > right-click on executable > "Properties".
Step 3. Click on the "Compatibility" tab and select "Run this program as an administrator".
Step 4. Save changes and reopen OBS to see if it works.
Though using the methods introduced above can solve your issue most of the time, it is possible that the problem still there. In such the case, we will recommend you to replace OBS Studio with a better screen recorder.
